The Valdelsa as “food district”, where the companies that produce and process products for human food consumption are born, grow and continue to invest.
The last case concerns the investment made by the “Medicei” of Montelupo, which has inaugurated a new shed – from about 2. 500 square meters – in via dell’Industria, about one kilometer from the headquarters, which is in via Crafts. The company – led today by Paola De Angeli– has invested 4 million euros to jump on a constantly expanding market branch: it is gluten free, that is gluten-free, for those suffering from celiac disease. A similar story – to give an example – to the Calugi of Castelfiorentino, a strong company on the processing of truffles, which gradually grew in the industrial area of Castellana. The company Medicei – so far – produced “only” ready meals, following the tradition of Italian culinary art. Now – in the new shed – there is space for a gluten-free production laboratory and a 600-square-meter cold store for the storage of finished products ready for distribution to shops and supermarkets throughout Italy. A reality of about 50 employees, to which they will be able to add new ones as early as next year,
“We are deeply tied to Montelupo – explains the president Paola De Angeli – its industrial area is really well served and we fell in love with it from the first moment. Now we will focus on gluten – free, a constantly growing market. It is clear that the product – compared to the standard – will have a higher cost but we will certainly be competitive ». A dish – for example tortellini with meat sauce – will cost about twice as much as the traditional “colleague”.
The company has already started all the practices to have the recognition of “substitutive food”, for the purchase of which people suffering from celiac disease enjoy coupons from the health care company. Clearly, the new plant – especially the laboratory – will be off limits compared to the part where gluten is used, in order to avoid contaminations dangerous to health.
“If all goes well as I hope – continues De Angeli – by the summer we can increase the workforce of about 5-8 people, even if we still can not be certain on the number. Ours is a sector that has suffered the crisis but has remained with its head out of the water. On the other hand, growing up is a condemnation, in the sense that if we remain still we are destined to remain sucked “. The Medici will be one of the few companies to produce dishes ready for coeliacs. Already in 2004 – when the company moved from Lastra a Signa to Montelupo – this investment was evaluated, then postponed to better times.
The increasing attention to the needs of those who can not eat gluten has become a driving force to bring new jobs, in a Valdelsa that is specializing in food production.
